Smart Decisions Can Make Heavy Duty Trucking a Better, Safer, and More Comfortable Experience

Aug 12, 2022

Driving a fully loaded heavy-duty truck across the states can be a very uncomfortable, stressful, and tiring experience. In fact, those are some of the main reasons why large trucks often get into accidents that could have been avoided. Regulated hours, comfortable seats, and adequate shock absorption kits allow truckers to stay focused on the road, rather than being constantly distracted by back pain, bad road conditions, and lack of sleep. In fact, smart decision-making plays a big part in keeping the roads safe for everyone, even before a truck is bought. However, prior to discussing remedies, a look through the problems themselves is required.

Why Truckers Need to be Extra Cautious

According to data published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 82.25% (4,139) of the 5032 large truck related fatalities in 2019 were pedestrians or people in passenger cars. In 2020, 83.26% (4,134) of the 4,965 fatalities were also either pedestrians or people inside passenger cars. The number of lawsuits launched by the other parties involved in both fatal and nonfatal truck accidents is beyond the 150,000 mark per year. As one can ascertain, none of that is good for anyone and precautions must be taken by heavy duty truckers to save themselves and those that ride alongside them.

It’s not always the driver’s or even the truck’s fault, but truckers must still take extra responsibility to keep even the rulebreakers around them as safe as possible. Irrespective of whose fault it might be, the other party is likely to get the worst of it in an accident. Truckers suffer losses soon after as well, even if they manage to escape serious injury and/or death. Everything, including the truck will be seized at first. The driver and their employer (if applicable) will be investigated, and until the situation is resolved favorably, both the truck and its driver will be out of business indefinitely.

Investing in Functional Upgrades

Installing clever, functional, and personalized upgrades like customized shock absorbers, coil springs, leveling kits, suspension lifts, and automatic air-disc brakes among others can transform almost any heavy-duty truck into a better, safer, more reliable, and more comfortable version of itself. This holds true whether the truck is towing trailers or just hauling cargo on its bed as a single unit. Making an Informed Choice

Manufacturers use a confusing series of terms to classify their various pickup trucks, but there are no universal standards that these classifications follow as a rule. For example, the Ford Super Duty F-series has some of the best heavy duty pickup trucks available in its class, but the moniker “Super Duty” seems to indicate that the Ford trucks are in a higher tier of transportation than other heavy-duty trucks like the GMC Sierra 3500HD, although that’s not true.

Therefore, trucks should be sorted through and chosen based on the buyer’s own commercial and legal requirements. Taking time to learn more about one’s options in more detail, and then comparing them to the business’s requirements can help in making more informed choices. It’s as much about making a better business investment, as it is about ensuring the safety of everyone on road. For example, buying a truck that’s underpowered for the job often leads to illegal overloading, which is one of the common causes of truck related accidents.
