TRRA expands Madison Yard to add 500-car storage-in-transit capacity

The Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis (TRRA) announced an expansion of its Madison Yard facility in Venice, Illinois, adding approximately 500 railcar positions dedicated to storage-in-transit service, with the new capacity expected to begin accepting cars in October 2026, to support growing demand from Class I rail partners and industrial customers.

As one of the largest rail yards in the St. Louis region, Madison Yard serves as a central interchange hub, where railcars are received, classified, staged, and routed across North America. The expansion enhances TRRA’s ability to provide flexible storage, reduce network congestion, and improve overall supply chain fluidity.

TRRA operates as a independent switching and terminal railroad, interconnecting all six Class I railroads—BNSF, Canadian National, CSX, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, and Canadian Pacific Kansas City—at one of the most strategically located freight hubs in the United States. This connectivity allows freight to move seamlessly between rail carriers, offering customers efficient access to markets in every direction.

The additional storage-in-transit capacity will allow customers to stage railcars closer to end markets, manage inventory dynamically, and respond quickly to changing demand, particularly for bulk commodities and industrial shipments.

“This project reflects our clear understanding of the importance of adding capacity across our network,” said Matt Whitney, Director of Strategic Planning and Business Development for TRRA. “Strategic investments like the Madison Yard expansion are critical to our long-term growth plan, ensuring we can continue to support our Class I partners, attract new customers, and provide the flexibility and reliability that today’s supply chains demand.”
Located at the crossroads of the national freight network, TRRA provides direct access to all major rail corridors and serves as a key gateway across the Mississippi River, supporting both east-west and north-south rail movements.
