Loconi Intermodal S.A. continues to strengthen its footprint with a new terminal, strategically located in Zbąszynek. The 9.4-hectare facility is developed adjacent to the E20 railway line, which is part of the Trans European Transport Network, commonly referred to as ‘TEN-T’, near the A2 motorway and S3 express road.
The project received over PLN 76 million in co-funding from the European Union's (EU) FEnIKS program – Loconi signed the co-funding agreement with the Centre for EU Transport Projects (CUPT) as one of the program’s beneficiaries in Poland, underscoring the project’s alignment with Europe’s transport decarbonization and connectivity objectives.
The new terminal is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2028. The facility will be equipped with four handling tracks, enabling the simultaneous handling of two full-length trains, a storage yard with a capacity of 4,500 TEUs, and low-emission equipment, including two electric rubber-tired gantry (E-RTG) cranes.
“The investment in Zbąszynek reflects both the sustained growth in maritime cargo flows through Polish ports and the increasing importance of efficient hinterland connections,” said Niels Jakobsgaard Andersen, CEO of Loconi Intermodal “This new intermodal terminal will strengthen our ability to manage rising volumes, enhance cross-border connectivity as part of PSA Group’s Node to Network strategy, and support our customers in transitioning to more sustainable and reliable supply chain solutions.”
The investment will support the growth of local businesses, improve the efficiency of regional supply chains and reduce pressure on main transit corridors.
Beyond increasing capacity, the terminal will strengthen the resilience of regional supply chain networks by expanding inland handling capabilities and reinforcing rail-based transport. This will enable more balanced and flexible freight flows across Central and Eastern Europe while easing congestion on critical routes.
This project marks another step in Loconi’s ambition to strengthen rail’s role in resilient and sustainable European supply chains.
The experienced Polish construction firm Adamietz has been appointed as the general contractor for the project.
