Freight optimization is a relative term because what can be done to optimize the process depends on multiple variables such as the cargo type, the distance, the mode(s) of delivery, etc. Other than these, there is also the question about where the freight company is right now in terms of optimization.
It’s 2022 and even smaller companies operating successfully within the supply chain sectors have already optimized their freight delivery systems to at least some degree. Nevertheless, for any freight company to properly optimize its delivery system, it must do so comprehensively. Gaps in optimization can result in imbalances, which might even turn out to be counterproductive. Keeping the latest and the tested freight shipment optimizations in mind, the following changes, updates, and upgrades come well recommended.
Invest in Optimizing the Geographic Information System (GIS) Comprehensively
Modern GIS has changed the way supply chain and delivery operates forever. In fact, it would be difficult to find a freight company these days that have not adopted GIS technology to at least some extent. However, that integration needs to be comprehensive and collaborative. To close gaps in a freight company’s GIS mapping and tracking system, it is important that all of the following criteria are met.
Smaller freight companies mustn't end up overinvesting. It must be noted that the difference in scale will always be there, and changes should always be incremental to allow room for improvement, recuperation, and adjustment.
Train Every Driver and Employee
If this seems like a huge expense, then it would still be one worth making. However, it does not have to be a huge expense at all, thanks to digital technology. Simply arrange for short training sessions online to make sure all drivers and employees know how to use the newly upgraded systems properly. Having the latest in hardware and software would mean little if the very people operating it all are not properly trained to maximize them.
Recruit Well-Trained Executives to Handle the Managerial Positions
For once, training and up-to-date knowledge should take precedence over experience, although it is preferable to have both. When each critical point is managed by well-trained supply chain managers with intricate and up-to-date understanding of freight optimization technology, businesses tend to do well.
Experience is always invaluable, but in an industry that’s so heavily reliant on technology, it is more important to have people in key positions who can handle the responsibilities and complications of today’s digitized supply chain with relative ease.
Not that a manager cannot be trained, of course, but that would only add further to the expense, and it would take time. A bit of clever recruitment strategy can even turn newly recruited supply chain managers into temporary trainers for the crew under their control.
