The Port of Oakland has passed a critical milestone in its proposed Terminal Modernization and Development Project for Oakland International Airport (OAK) with today’s release of a Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR).
The Port, which owns and operates OAK, will host a series of public meetings during the extended 60-day public review and comment period in order to collect feedback from the community.
OAK is proposing to modernize Terminals 1 and 2 and construct a new terminal. The purpose of the proposed project is:
• To increase the number of passenger gates at the airport to meet the increased demand
• Update OAK’s facilities to meet aviation industry standards, and
• Improve operational efficiency and safety for passengers and employees alike.
“The release of this draft Environmental Impact Report represents the Port of Oakland’s ongoing commitment to transparency, public service, and investment in Oakland International Airport as a valuable asset of the region,” says Craig Simon, Interim Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland. “We look forward to the next steps as we continue this environmental process. We appreciate our community’s continued interest and feedback in our efforts to introduce new and improved facilities to better meet the needs of the passengers who fly through OAK.”
The proposed project would involve the construction of a new 830,000-square-foot terminal building with connection to the existing Terminals 1 and 2 as well as the modernization of the present passenger facilities. A net total of up to 16 additional passenger gates would be added to meet increasing air travel demand.
