USCBC responds to Trump Administration’s increase of US tariffs on China

Mar 04, 2025

The US-China Business Council (USCBC), a private, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization of around 270 American companies that do business in China, today responded to President Donald Trump’s executive order to further increase tariffs on Chinese imports.

“USCBC applauds the Trump administration’s goal of addressing the illegal trade of fentanyl that has had such a devastating impact on American lives. Raising tariffs on Chinese products, however, is not the way to achieve that goal,” USCBC President Sean Stein said. “Across-the-board tariffs will hurt US businesses, consumers, and farmers and undermine our global competitiveness. Instead, we urge the two governments to engage in broad-based negotiations to address fentanyl and other important issues, including challenges to selling US goods and services in China’s market and striking a deal that enhances US national security and competitiveness and grows the American economy. Any use of tariffs should be strategic and targeted, focusing on specific US national security goals and unfair Chinese economic practices.”
