SeaRoutes, the start-up accelerated at ZEBOX seeking to make goods transportation greene

Feb 11, 2020

SeaRoutes was conceived in Germany with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions from maritime transport. On the strength of its technological maturity after 6 months spent in the ZEBOX incubator-accelerator, the start-up has expanded its services to goods transportation and now offers a service for tracking, route planning and weather routing. Offered in the form of APIs, these services enable players in the supply chain (logistics, maritime and financial operators) to benefit from the most accurate routes to plan, route and improve journeys from point A to point B.

SeaRoutes' technology allows players and professionals in the sector to reduce fuel costs, lower emissions (COx, NOx, SOx), improve the accuracy of schedules and arrival times, provide reporting transparency and improve risk anticipation for 90% of world trade.
A success and an environmental commitment
Arriving at ZEBOX in January 2019, the start-up had 3 staff, 2,000 users per day on the platform and 5 customers. Supported by ZEBOX for 6 months within its acceleration program, SeaRoutes now has 20 customers, with a conversion rate of more than 40%, and has doubled its number of daily users.
“Our objective within ZEBOX is to support start-ups who want to think bigger and to give them the means to enter new markets." explains Matthieu Somekh, CEO of ZEBOX. "Supporting SeaRoutes on environmental and artificial intelligence issues that are at the heart of the problem areas faced by logistical operators is an exciting challenge. We believed in their potential from the get-go, so we opened the doors of our network of corporate partners to them so that they could challenge their business model, work alongside leading players in the field and therefore accelerate their development.”
The start-up's customers include major international maritime players (carriers, shipping companies and fleet managers) and an international strategy consulting firm. SeaRoutes seeks to extend its market to players working in the logistics field who are interested in controlling CO2 emissions and ETAs. A rapid success story made possible thanks to the maturity of its innovation and the corporate network that ZEBOX made available to the start-up.
“After hearing about the greenhouse gas challenge, I immediately looked into an innovative route planning tool, like Google Maps but for the sea.” says Pierre Garreau, CEO and founder of SeaRoutes. “The support offered by ZEBOX and its network has allowed us to go further and develop our idea. Today, SeaRoutes is accessible to all players involved in goods transportation and this is just the start.”
Renowned technological innovation
The technological innovation developed by SeaRoutes has been acknowledged many times since it arrived at the ZEBOX accelerator and incubator. In particular, the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille (GPMM) made SeaRoutes the winner of the Smartport Challenge 1st edition, intended to contribute to the emergence of the French Smartport in Med. With its eco-calculator to quantify a container's carbon footprint based on its journey, SeaRoutes intends to respond to a major challenge: reduce greenhouse gas emissions related to freight transport. Since July 4, the GPMM has been testing the prototype designed by SeaRoutes. The start-up is now seeking to extend its partnership with other ports to tackle environmental issues.
SeaRoutes' technology crosses borders. The start-up was in Hong Kong on November 19 for the final of the Captain's Table international start-up competition, an initiative launched by YPSN Ltd to connect pioneers and entrepreneurs in the maritime and logistics sector. Organized during Hong Kong Maritime Week, this event allowed SeaRoutes to introduce itself to local players and present its technological innovation.
Lastly, SeaRoutes has been nominated for the Sardine Trophy. This European competition for start-ups and innovative companies in sea-related fields (shipping, energy, ecology, logistics and maritime sports), which is designed to promote start-ups, entrepreneurship and innovation in maritime activities, will close in Spring 2020.
