Public procurement for the expansion of the Container terminal

Aug 02, 2024

In the last few days, Luka Koper published a public procurement for one of the company’s largest and most important projects in the coming years. The investment will include the construction of a container quay and additional storage space in the northern part of Pier 1. The deadline for submission of tenders is 30 September 2024.

The public tender is intended for the construction of a quayside of 326 metres, 7 hectares of stacking and handling areas, dredging and the construction of the necessary power infrastructure. The quay is designed as a reinforced concrete structure, which will be founded on deep steel piles foundations. These will be drilled up to 66 metres below the seabed to ensure adequate load-bearing capacity and stability. The project is not only challenging from a construction point of view, as it will also be necessary to ensure the smooth operation of all adjacent terminals and maritime activities during construction. According to the timetable, work is expected to start early next year and be completed by the end of 2027.

The project is one of the key ones included in the strategic business plan of the Port of Koper for the period 2024 – 2028. As pointed out by Nevenka Kržan, President of the Management Board of Luka Koper, the launch of the public procurement procedure is only the first but important step in this financially and organisationally very demanding project. “By expanding the capacity of the container terminal, we are responding to the expectations of shipowners and logistics operators and strengthening our position among the North-Adriatic ports. The construction will follow the second railway track project, which is expected to be completed in 2026, so that the Port of Koper, as well as the entire Slovenian logistics sector, will benefit from the advantages of the upgraded port and rail infrastructure in the first years of operation.”
