The Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) today announced the Port of Long Beach as the inaugural recipient of the Intermodal Innovation Award, recognizing organizations whose leadership and vision and are advancing the future of intermodal freight transportation.

The Intermodal Innovation Award honors a for-profit business, nonprofit organization, educational institution or government agency that has made a significant and measurable contribution to the advancement of the intermodal freight transportation industry.

The Port of Long Beach was selected for its sustained leadership in strengthening the nation's intermodal freight network through strategic infrastructure investment, digital innovation, operational excellence, environmental stewardship and collaboration across the supply chain. Collectively, these initiatives have improved freight mobility, increased supply chain visibility and reinforced the Port's role as a catalyst for innovation across North America's intermodal transportation system.

"The Intermodal Innovation Award recognizes organizations that don't simply respond to change—they help create it," said Anne Reinke, President and CEO of IANA. "The Port of Long Beach has consistently demonstrated what forward-looking leadership looks like by investing in the infrastructure, technology and partnerships that strengthen intermodal transportation for the entire industry. Their work is creating lasting benefits for shippers, carriers, ports and supply chain partners across North America, making them a fitting inaugural recipient of this award."

The Port was recognized for initiatives that are advancing intermodal freight transportation, including:

  • Long-term planning to expand intermodal capacity;
  • Investments in rail and freight infrastructure;
  • Digital tools that improve cargo visibility and planning;
  • Sustainable freight transportation initiatives; and
  • Collaboration with industry and public-sector partners to address shared supply chain challenges.

"The Port of Long Beach has demonstrated that innovation is not a single project or technology, but a sustained commitment to improving how freight moves," Reinke added. "Their leadership reflects the spirit of this award and the future of our industry."
