NAMEPA recognizes Port Everglades’ sustainability efforts

Port Everglades earned high marks from the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) for its commitment to sustainability through the organization's Maritime Sustainability Passport (MSP) Program, according to a report released in late March by NAMEPA. This notable achievement highlights the port's dedication to environmental stewardship, social responsibility and governance (ESG) best practices.

The MSP Program is an industry-leading initiative that evaluates ports and maritime organizations based on their sustainability measures. Port Everglades demonstrated remarkable progress in six key measurements, including education, technology, waste management and emissions reduction.

The MSP Program assessment recognizes that the port made inroads in educating its employees about sustainability and how they can reinforce existing efforts. It also noted the port's progress in adopting sustainable technologies such as LED lighting and energy-efficient infrastructure.

"We are honored to receive this recognition from NAMEPA for the second year in a row," said Port Everglades CEO and Port Director Joseph Morris. "Continuous improvement is at the core of our operations, and this achievement reinforces our efforts to implement innovative and proven practices that benefit our community, our staff and the maritime industry."

Another indicator of the port's commitment is its waste management policies, such as recycling for paper, ink cartridges and lighting, that align with industry best practices for environmental responsibility and operational efficiency.

The review cited the port's "strong progress" in tracking and managing direct greenhouse gas emissions and monitoring key pollutants such as CO2, NOx and methane.

The port's successful completion of the MSP Program underscores its ongoing commitment to enhance its sustainability initiatives for a cleaner and more efficient future for global trade and transportation.
