Mexico lays out measures to avoid steel, textile dumping

Mexico has rolled out measures to fight against a flood of low-cost imports of steel and textiles, Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard said on Monday, a practice known as dumping.

Ebrard said that officials had reviewed the list of steel mills approved to import product into Mexico, and canceled the registration of around half of them.

He said those importers had committed a "foul" by committing unfair trade practices.

Mexico has also slapped some tariffs on textile imports in recent months, Ebrard explained, adding a meeting with business leaders was set for later this month.

He said the government was implementing reference prices, a baseline value, for imports of products such as furniture, toys, sports equipment, paper and cardboard.

The Mexican economy grew 0.2% in the first quarter compared to the final three months of 2024, preliminary data showed last month.
