CA Ports applaud Governor Newsom for investing $27M in innovative port data initiative that will help move goods faster

Jul 12, 2024

Today, the California Association of Port Authorities applauded Governor Newsom for an initiative that will invest $27 million in 10 innovative projects at the Ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oakland, San Diego, and Hueneme.

The projects include a wide range of solutions including optimization of cargo-routing, deployment of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, implementation of climate resiliency and emissions reductions measures, adoption of trucking appointment systems, and the development of new data standards for cargo.

“We applaud Governor Newsom, California Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin, and GO-Biz Director and Senior Advisor to Governor Gavin Newsom Dee Dee Myers for their consistent commitment to enhancing California’s supply chain,” said CAPA President Kristine Zortman. “These critical funds will establish more coordination across the supply chain at a time when the global economy is counting on California Ports.”

The funds follow the signing of a first-of-its-kind Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) last spring that formed the California Port Data Partnership between the five ports. Both the MOU and the awards are expected to yield significant economic, environmental, and transportation benefits for the State.

CAPA comprises 11 major deepwater port authorities across California. Since its founding in 1940, CAPA has remained dedicated to this mission by educating state and federal policymakers on port operations while also advancing the best interests of the maritime community.
