Ambassador Tai statement on GAO report on USMCA Autos Interagency Coordination

Feb 01, 2024

United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai issued the following statement after the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released its report on the interagency coordination to implement, verify, and enforce the new automotive rules of origin under the United States- Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The GAO report was mandated under the USMCA Implementation Act (P.L. 116-113).

“Since early 2020, the Office of the United States Trade Representative and other Federal Agencies have worked together to implement, certify, enforce, and monitor the USMCA’s new automotive rules of origin. The GAO’s report clearly documents that this collaboration under the Biden-Harris Administration has been effective in achieving our goal of ensuring U.S. auto workers and manufacturers receive the maximum benefit under the Agreement.

“As chair of the Interagency Committee on Trade in Automotive Goods, USTR looks forward to implementing the GAO’s recommendation to further strengthen our interagency collaboration in order to better support our workers and manufacturers. We will continue to work with our interagency partners and with Canada and Mexico to support our workers and safeguard the competitiveness of the North American automotive industry.”
