Transportation Construction Coalition urges action on next surface transportation reauthorization

one hour ago

The Transportation Construction Coalition (TCC), the unified voice of America’s transportation construction industry, commemorates the upcoming 70th anniversary of the Interstate Highway System on June 29, 2026, a milestone that underscores the urgent need for Congress to pass a new surface transportation authorization and modernize this critical network.

The interstate system, which spans nearly 49,000 miles, remains essential to moving people and goods safely and efficiently across the country. By facilitating the reliable movement of goods at scale, the Interstate Highway System helps keep costs of essential goods down, improving affordability for families and businesses.

“From supporting supply chains to connecting communities, America’s Interstate Highway System has powered economic growth and opportunity in every region of the country for decades,” the coalition said. “As this system ages and demand continues to grow, sustained federal investment through a new surface transportation reauthorization is essential to ensure it remains safe, reliable, and efficient for the millions of Americans who depend on it every day.”

With current federal surface transportation programs set to expire on Sept. 30, 2026, the coalition underscored the urgency of passing a long-term reauthorization that invests in the interstate system and provides states and communities with the certainty needed to plan and deliver infrastructure projects.

“Congress must pass the next surface transportation reauthorization and reinforce the federal commitment that created the interstate system by investing in key initiatives such as major bridge improvements, freight movement projects, and road and workzone safety programs,” the coalition continued. “Advancing a new surface transportation reauthorization bill by September 30 will support continued economic growth for communities nationwide and keep America moving.”

Across the country, key interstate corridors demonstrate how federal investments help maintain the system’s critical role in connecting communities, strengthening supply chains, and supporting economic growth:

• Interstate 10 serves as a vital Gulf Coast corridor, connecting major economic hubs from Texas to Louisiana and supporting one of the nation’s most important freight routes. Investments along this corridor, including the Calcasieu River Bridge, help strengthen supply chains, reduce congestion, and keep goods moving efficiently across the region while improving safety for regional drivers.

• Interstate 70 connects communities and commerce from the Rocky Mountains through the Midwest, serving as one of the country’s most critical east–west freight corridors. Federal funding to modernize key segments of I-70 ensures it continues to meet growing demand, preventing freight bottlenecks and protecting affordability for millions of Americans.

• Interstate 90 is a critical artery for New York’s economy, linking upstate communities to national and international markets while supporting freight movement, tourism, and regional development. Continued investment in I-90 and the Castleton-on-Hudson Bridge, which carries drivers over the Hudson River, drives economic growth, enhances connectivity, and sustains long-term economic growth and opportunity across the state.
