The Port of NY and NJ recognizes companies for emission reduction effort

The Port of New York and New Jersey has had over a decade of success with its Clean Vessel Incentive (CVI) program. Since its inception in 2013, more companies have begun participating in the program, which has progressively helped reduce emissions each year. In 2023, the Port of New York and New Jersey reached its highest participation rate, with 450 vessels enrolled in the program.

We’d like to recognize the following companies for their efforts in reducing emissions, conserving fuel, and protecting marine mammals when calling on our port in 2023.

To qualify for recognition, operators had to make a minimum of 15 calls per year. They were rated in three categories:  

• Vessel Speed Reduction (VSR) compliance rate, represented by the percentage of total trip legs at reduced speed.
• CVI program participation, represented by the percentage of participating operators’ vessels enrolled in the program calling on the Port of New York and New Jersey.
• Environmental Ship Index (ESI) score, based on CVI participant’s average. 

In the VSR category, which requires vessels to slow-steam at 10 knots or less from 20 nautical miles outside the Territorial Sea Line, K Line received top honors with a 71% VSR compliance rate, followed by MOL Americas with 70%, and Yang Ming Line with 69%. By reducing vessel speeds, these operators helped lower criteria air pollutants, CO2 emissions, and the risk of fatal strikes on whales.

In the CVI category, Atlantic Container Line, Grimaldi Deep Sea SpA, and Yang Ming shared first-place honors. All three operators had a 100% participation rate in enrolling their vessels calling on the Port of New York and New Jersey in the CVI program. 

Grimaldi Deep Sea SpA received top honors in the ESI score category with an average ESI score of 52.49. Evergreen Shipping Agency was recognized for its 51.81 average ESI score, followed by Atlantic Container Line, with a 51.80 average ESI score.
