Strong U.S. interest in Wilhelmshaven, Germany’s only deep-water container port

Participation in the Breakbulk Americas trade fair in Houston, together with a customer event in Philadelphia and a port visit in New York, was a well-chosen opportunity for JadeWeserPort presentations in the USA.

North American shippers show great interest in the JadeWeserPort Wilhelmshaven. Representatives of the JadeWeserPort used their participation in the trade fair in Houston and the following information event at the port location in Philadelphia for discussions with shippers as well as port and shipping representatives. The events were organized in cooperation with the terminal operator EUROGATE and Hapag-Lloyd.

"We are making good progress with the expansion of our liner services in North America. Since January 2024, Hapag-Lloyd's Atlantic Loop 4 service has been offering a fast connection across the Atlantic. Shippers in the USA and Mexico, as well as on the European side, can now use a direct connection to Houston and the Mexican ports of Veracruz and Altamira for their import or export shipments via Wilhelmshaven," explains Marc-Oliver Hauswald, Managing Director of the JadeWeserPort marketing association.

André Heim, Head of Sales at JadeWeserPort Wilhelmshaven, adds: "JadeWeserPort is accessible around the clock regardless of the tides and is Germany's only deep-water container port with a water depth of 18 meters. This reinforces Wilhelmshaven's competitive edge as a port and logistics hub and is an attractive proposition for shippers from industry and the transport and logistics sector". Heim believes that the visit to the Breakbulk Americas trade fair in Houston and the customer event organized together with partners PhilaPort and Hapag-Lloyd in Philadelphia were successful in informing existing customers about current developments and acquiring new customers for JadeWeserPort.

JadeWeserPort expands connections to U.S. and Canadian ports

The roadshow was a notable success for the Wilhelmshaven delegation and its local partners in the United States. The Wilhelmshaven delegation was able to maintain and expand existing contacts with shippers, industry partners, and ports. In Houston, for example, a constructive exchange took place with representatives of the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation. The objective is to foster collaboration and establish links with Canadian ports.

For North American shippers, the existing liner services and the efficient transport connections by rail and truck, as well as the short sea connections in Wilhelmshaven, are very attractive. In addition to rapid handling and seamless processing at the terminal, inbound and outbound transportation to and from economic regions and metropolitan areas is highly efficient.

More than 250 million consumers in Europe can be reached via JadeWeserPort.

Foreign trade between Germany and the USA, Germany's most important trading partner, is dominated by containerized goods on a monetary basis. The main goods imported by sea from the USA to Germany are pharmaceutical products, data processing equipment, car parts, chemical products, and machinery. Germany's primary exports to the USA include automotive parts, machinery, pharmaceutical and chemical products, data processing equipment, and electrical equipment.

Germany's only deep-water container port, JadeWeserPort Wilhelmshaven, is strategically located on the North Sea coast and has evolved into a pivotal hub among the North Range ports. At the interface between land and sea, efficient port and logistics locations on both sides of the Atlantic are of significant importance for the seamless handling of international supply chains. Wilhelmshaven offers shippers and shipping companies ideal nautical and geographic conditions for handling their international sea and land transportation. In addition, the JadeWeserPort freight village, which is directly linked to the terminal, offers sufficient storage capacity for distribution operations on a total area of 150 hectares. Since mid-year, a newly constructed multi-user logistics hall with an area of approximately 30,000 square meters has been available to interested companies. Within the next two years, another 110,000 square meters of covered warehouse space will be added. Sufficient expansion space for new settlement projects is available for investors.
