Spirit Airlines adds Miami International Airport as third South Florida option

Jul 09, 2021

Spirit Airlines to launch with 30 routes at MIA, complementing its long-running international gateway at Fort Lauderdale and service from West Palm Beach

Florida’s Hometown Airline is making an even bigger and brighter commitment to the Sunshine State by expanding its reach in South Florida. After initially releasing a proposed schedule in June, today Miramar-based Spirit Airlines (NYSE: SAVE) confirmed plans to start service at Miami International Airport (MIA) and announced that tickets are on sale for 30 convenient, nonstop routes that start this fall. MIA will be Spirit’s third South Florida airport—joining Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach—and its seventh airport statewide.

Spirit’s bright yellow planes are a familiar sight for people living in South Florida, given how many Miami-Dade and Monroe County residents already make the trip up to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to take advantage of Spirit’s Signature Service and on-time flights to 38 destinations throughout the U.S., and 24 cities spanning 14 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Spirit’s initial schedule is big enough to earn the airline a place as MIA’s second largest carrier. The airline is already the largest at FLL, where it will reach 100 departures per day later this month. Adding service at MIA is the next chapter of Spirit’s story as the carrier steps up to meet the demand for high-value travel to and from South Florida. The expansion is supported by 16 brand new fuel-efficient Airbus A320neo planes being delivered this year. Next year, Spirit plans to accept another 21 new planes into the airline’s Fit Fleet™, which is among the youngest in the industry.
