Sean Flaherty brings deep public expertise to HDR as Transportation Sustainability and Resiliency Director

Nov 10, 2023

HDR has hired Sean Flaherty as its transportation sustainability and resiliency director.

Flaherty’s 16-year career has centered on advancing sustainability efforts across the Carolinas, with public sector, private, and nonprofit experience. Most recently, Flaherty served as the energy and transportation program manager for the Central Pines Regional Council, where he managed projects focused on regional, state, and national sustainable development. In his career, he has developed or expanded programs to prepare for electric vehicle readiness, improve sustainability outcomes in Charlotte’s business district, and coordinate new sustainability offices across North Carolina. In 2005 he launched North Carolina State University’s first environmental-focused spring break service trip, which continues today.

At HDR, Flaherty will lead sustainability and resiliency efforts across the company’s transportation-related service offerings. He will use his expertise to help clients build sustainable, resilient infrastructure that will serve current and future generations. He will also serve as a link between HDR’s broad transportation and resiliency expertise, connecting our subject matter experts with the clients who will use their services to define and actualize measurable achievements that can be scaled and replicated. He will support services throughout the full program life cycle, as well as supporting sustainability visioning and long-range sustainability and resiliency planning.

“Sustainability and the environment have been my passion for my entire professional career, and I’ve enjoyed many opportunities to help improve sustainability outcomes in North Carolina,” he said. “I relish the opportunity to bring that skill and expertise to HDR’s clients globally.”

HDR defines sustainability as the act of balancing the environmental, social and economic needs of the built and natural environments for present and future generations. The firm strives to offer clients the best possible economic, social and environmental value by delivering integrated and balanced solutions, resulting in sound choices and decisions. HDR’s broad service offerings include: transportation agency sustainability planning; all kinds of planning for electric vehicles and fleets; modern airport sustainability work; and risk and vulnerability assessments to support resilience planning and design.

“Sean’s practical experience helping clients implement and fund their sustainability visions will be an asset across HDR’s transportation work,” said Janet González Tudor, HDR’s transportation advisory services director.
