Port of Oakland Terminals Reopen

The Port of Oakland’s three terminals, Oakland International Container Terminal, Everport and TraPac, which had been subject to a shutdown after International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) walked off the job on Wednesday (November 2, 2022) over an ongoing local contract dispute. (see Stas Margaronis AJOT article “ILWU Clerks Shut Down Port of Oakland”)

According to reports the container terminals resumed operations 6 PM on Wednesday {the night shift].

The genesis of the dispute at Oakland has been described “a pay dispute” and noted that in recent weeks, there has been a slowdown of Port of Oakland marine terminal operations caused by a shortage of ship clerks that is related to the dispute. Such disputes typically would have gone to arbitration and been resolved, but as the ILWU has been working without a contract and therefore the arbitration option isn’t on the table. The contract between the ILWU and Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) expired on July 1, 2022, and operations have continued during ongoing negotiations.
