Port of Barcelona awards the contract for construction of the embankment of the new Catalunya wharf enclosures

The Port of Barcelona's Management Board today awarded the contract for construction of the embankment of the enclosures of the new Catalunya wharf to the joint venture Sacyr Construcción, SA – José Antonio Romero Polo, SAU for an amount of €72,359,045.87 (excluding VAT). The works will take 27 months to complete and will involve building a sea embankment, which will form the first enclosure for depositing materials from the dredging of the port docks, the navigation channel and other works in progress, such as the Adossat wharf or the new mooring points of the Energy wharf.

The embankment will delimit an area of 44.7 hectares between the South and Prat wharves and will be up to 16 metres deep, allowing it to be filled with nearly 6.3 million m3 of materials and will make it possible to start work on the terraces of the future Catalunya wharf. The works also include preparing a terrace for storing and managing the works material. This action is an example of a circular economy in the Port, enabling the recycling of materials and avoiding unnecessary transport to other locations.

This is the first step in the pending works that will make it possible to reorganise port activity in the southern area, concentrating all container movement in this area of the Port. The main objective of this reorganisation is to provide the Port of Barcelona with the necessary infrastructures to decarbonise port activity and meet the needs of the maritime and port sector.

The Port of Barcelona launched this tender one year ago after the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge issued the favourable report of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) of the future enclosures on January 2024. Work is forecast to start this summer.
