Port of Albany receives PERMA support for training and safety equipment

May 22, 2025

This past week, the Port of Albany Operations & Facilities team was honored to receive one of the Public Employer Risk Management Association, Inc. (PERMA) 2025 Safety Initiative Grants at its annual member meeting, besting two dozen other grant applicants.

“The Port of Albany is excited for the Operations & Facilities team’s health and safety initiatives to be recognized by PERMA,” said Richard Hendrick, Port of Albany CEO. “Because of the unique nature of the Port’s workplace, our team might be shifting from assisting one of the Port’s tenants or maintaining the roadways and facilities, to unexpectedly working at dockside, along the Hudson River in the maritime terminal. With these new vests, which are Coast Guard approved, the team won’t have to change gear to meet the demands of the day.”

Funding will be used to purchase inflatable work vests with enhanced mobility/comfort and visibility features along with reliable inflation/flotation for safety.

Earlier this year, the Port also received PERMA support for equipment, including a laptop and 55” flat screen TV, to enhance capabilities for group health and safety training sessions.

PERMA is a member-owned, not-for-profit association of public entities that provided workplace safety, risk management services, and workers’ compensation coverage through a group self-insurance program. PERMA serves more than 800 public entities across New York State.

The Port of Albany continues to be a key regional economic driver with an annual impact of more than $428 million and approximately 1,400 local jobs (and 4,500 jobs throughout the state).
