Pompeo threatens sanctions on EU companies over Nord Stream 2

The U.S. is moving toward sanctions against those involved in the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia to Germany, Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said.

“Get out now or risk the consequences,” Pompeo said at the State Department on Wednesday, saying the Trump administration will apply penalties under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, or Caatsa.

The U.S. contends the the 1,200-kilometer (745-mile) pipeline owned by Moscow-based Gazprom PJSC will give Russia undue control over energy supplies to Europe, but allies including Germany say the pipeline will provide needed resources.
