Paris Airport workers plan to strike in run-up to Olympics

Paris faces severe travel disruptions at its airports as workers prepare to go on strike on July 17, little over a week before the start of the Summer Olympic Games.

Five different unions handed in separate strike notices for the one-day stoppage, with Force Ouvriere planning a 24-hour strike starting on July 17 at 5 am, according to a joint statement. Union members will decide on that day whether to extend the strike, a spokesman said, as workers press for bigger bonuses and 1,000 new hires.

The dispute creates the risk that travel disruptions could hurt passenger flows into the French capital ahead of the Olympic Games, which are set to kick off on July 26.

Aeroports de Paris had no immediate comment.

Alongside train stations, the airports of Roissy Charles de Gaulle and Orly will be the main gateways into France for visitors, as well as for thousands of athletes and their equipment.
