New pirate attack in the Gulf of Guinea

Apr 11, 2023

Less than a month after the Danish-owned tanker Monjasa Reformer was attacked, pirates are believed to have struck a tanker again on Monday, TradeWinds reports based on a warning issued by Maritime Domain Awareness for Trade - Gulf of Guinea (MDAT-GoG).

According to the issued warning, the tanker was boarded around 16:00 when it was about 309 nautical miles southwest of Abijan in Ivory Coast.

MDAT-GoG does not provide any information on the identity of the ship, but according to the Maritime Bulletin media it was supposed to be the Singapore-flagged product tanker Succes 9 of 6,135 dwt.

The Monjasa-owned tanker Monjasa Reformer with 16 crew members on board was boarded by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea on March 25, 140 nautical miles off the Republic of Congo. It was located on March 30 by French Navy units off the island state of Sao Tomé & Principe.

The pirates had abandoned the ship but kidnapped an undisclosed number of crew members. There is still no news about their fate.
