Lyman named Executive Director of the Maritime Association of the Port of NY/NJ

The Maritime Association of the Port of New York/ New Jersey has appointed Stephen Lyman as Executive Director. He replaces Edward J. Kelly, who has retired after 18 years in the position. The announcement was made by Michael J. DiVirgilio, association President.

Lyman most recently was Commercial Associate Director at the Journal of Commerce. Previously, he served as the Port Newark Associate Director of the New York-based Seamen’s Church Institute, which advocates for the personal, professional, and spiritual well-being of merchant mariners and seafarers around the world.

In accepting his new role, Lyman said: “I look forward to promoting the Maritime Association’s mission to continue improving our port and our role within the supply chain.” He added: “I want to thank Ed Kelly for his many years of service as the Executive Director of the Maritime Association. Ed steered the organization through a global pandemic, relocated the office from Battery Place to Elizabeth, contributed to establishing the International Maritime Hall of Fame Award dinner and developed relationships with elected officials and decision-makers on maritime related issues. “

DiVirgilio added: “On behalf of our officers, Board of Directors and members, we thank Ed for his significant contributions over the years in steering the organization through the many challenges our industry faced. We look forward to our next chapter under the direction of Stephen. We will continue our outreach and diversification efforts, focusing on the needs of our members and the port community, as a whole.”

Lyman has nearly two decades of experience in different operational roles in the non-profit sector. He holds dual Bachelor degrees in Operations Management and Sociology from Montclair State University and a Master’s degree in Public Administration with a concentration in Nonprofit Management from Rutgers University, Newark. He is a Leadership Newark alumnus, LeadNJ Fellow, and has completed the Shipping 101 and Port Executive courses. He is a certified Ship Welfare Visitor from the Merchant Navy Welfare Board.

Lyman co-chaired the Workforce Development Implementation Team developed by the Port of NY & NJ’s Council on Port Performance, held a board leadership role with Young Shipping Professionals of New York and was the President of the Rutgers School of Public Affairs Alumni Network.
