Collaboration to pilot test ground-breaking artificial intelligence technologies

Lomar’s corporate venture lab, lomarlabs, and Mythos AI, a leader in advanced autonomous systems, have announced a ground-breaking collaboration that will pave the way for a safer and smarter shipping industry.

This collaboration combines Mythos AI’s cutting-edge expertise in autonomous navigation with lomarlabs’ innovative focus on maritime sustainability, supported by access to Lomar vessels for pilot testing of new technologies. Together, they aim to unlock the next generation of shipping solutions, tackling critical challenges such as navigational safety, operational efficiency and sustainability.

Mythos AI’s flagship technology includes the award-winning Archie unmanned survey vessel. Archie is the world's first vessel enabled by autonomy and an advanced pilot assist system (APAS), which is ideal for congested coastal and inland waterways and built for working coasts, whereas today's autonomous marine technologies are only viable for remote or offshore operations. Equipped with advanced sensors and real-time data acquisition systems, Archie delivers unmatched COLREGs compliant autonomous navigation, ensuring optimal performance in a rapidly evolving maritime landscape.

“With rapid developments that will see the commercial use of autonomous ships and the International Maritime Organization aiming to finalize and adopt its non-mandatory Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) Code to protect safety at sea by May 2025, this collaboration comes at a critical time,” said Stylianos Papageorgiou, Managing Director at lomarlabs. “Working with Mythos AI underscores our commitment to harnessing the best in technology and innovation to create cleaner, safer and more efficient maritime futures, allowing us to push the boundaries of what’s possible in sustainable shipping,” he added.

Autonomous technology has the potential to augment the capabilities of navigational officers, by enhancing bridge resource management, enabling precise route optimization and fuel efficiency while offering enhanced safety through real-time situational awareness and unwavering alertness. Moreover, with the right levels of cybersecurity in place, the cloud-based data interface allows seamless access to actionable insights, empowering stakeholders to make informed decisions.

Geoff Douglass, CEO of Mythos AI, said: “Our collaboration with lomarlabs represents a major step forward in advancing sustainable shipping solutions. By combining our autonomous technology with their deep maritime expertise, we are charting a new course for the industry that prioritizes both efficiency and environmental stewardship.”

Lomar CEO Nicholas Georgiou said: “AI-driven technologies possess huge potential for our shipping and wider maritime industry. This collaboration puts us at the forefront of future innovations to drive the efficiency, effectiveness, safety and sustainability of operations at sea, not least in congested shipping lanes.”
