Group Remains on Track Despite Passenger Decline in Frankfurt

Some 5.7 million passengers traveled via Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in June 2026, representing a decline of 1.7 percent compared to the same month in 2025. Within Europe, destinations in southern and northern Europe saw higher demand. On long-haul routes, traffic increased for destinations in the Far East, Africa, and Latin America. While traffic to and from the Middle East continues to recover month by month, passenger numbers to this region were still down 27.0 percent year-on-year in June.
In the first six months of 2026, approximately 28.9 million passengers used Frankfurt Airport, representing a decrease of 0.8 percent year-on-year. Destinations in the Middle East experienced the largest decline, mainly as a result of the outbreak of the Iran war. During the reporting period, only about 880,000 passengers traveled to this region, a 35 percent drop compared with the same period last year. In contrast, Africa (up 8.0 percent to 1.6 million passengers) and the Far East (up 6.4 percent to 3.3 million passengers) experienced particularly strong growth in the first half of the year.
Commenting on the Group’s performance to date and the outlook for the full year, Fraport CEO Dr. Stefan Schulte said: “The first half of the year was impacted by many extraordinary factors. Nearly 700,000 passengers in Frankfurt were directly affected by strikes at Lufthansa. The war in Iran led to significant flight restrictions and a decline in demand for the Middle East region. At the same time, concerns about jet fuel shortages and substantial increases in oil prices caused passengers to be noticeably more reluctant to book. As a result, airlines were forced to reduce capacity, in some cases quite significantly. Taken together, all of these factors are dampening our passenger outlook for Frankfurt Airport. After a slight decline in the first half of the year, we now project full-year passenger volumes to remain at about 2025 levels. In contrast, we continue to expect largely positive growth at our Group’s international airports, driven in part by more favorable underlying economic conditions. Regarding our financial targets, we continue to view the guidance set at the start of the year as achievable and are therefore maintaining our financial outlook for 2026. However, the somewhat weaker traffic levels in Germany are expected to have a dampening effect on our full-year financial performance.”
Cargo volumes at FRA (comprising airfreight and airmail) increased by 2.0 percent year-on-year in June 2026, reaching 177,676 metric tons (H1/2026: 1.0 million metric tons, up 1.0 percent year-on-year). The number of aircraft movements declined by 4.9 percent to 39,390 takeoffs and landings (H1/2026: 210,886 aircraft movements, down 3.8 percent). Total maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) decreased by 2.3 percent in June to around 2.5 million metric tons (H1/2026: 13.2 million metric tons, down 3.1 percent).
Outside Germany, most airports in Fraport’s global network recorded growth in June 2026. At Ljubljana Airport (LJU) in Slovenia, passenger traffic rose sharply by 12.7 percent year-on-year, with 184,211 travelers passing through the country’s capital city airport. Fraport’s two Brazilian gateways, Fortaleza (FOR) and Porto Alegre (POA), reported a combined increase of 2.0 percent to 1.2 million passengers. Traffic at Peru’s Lima Airport (LIM) was up 0.9 percent in June, reaching around 2.0 million passengers. Fraport’s 14 Greek airports served a total of 5.6 million passengers, representing growth of 4.7 percent. In Bulgaria, the two coastal airports of Burgas (BOJ) and Varna (VAR) welcomed 593,964 passengers, an increase of 8.0 percent. Meanwhile, traffic at Antalya Airport (AYT) on the Turkish Riviera declined by 9.6 percent in the reporting month to 4.5 million passengers. This decrease can be attributed to high tourism prices in the region this year and a noticeable reluctance among passengers to book package holidays due to the tense geopolitical situation in the Middle East.
The total number of passengers at all airports actively managed by Fraport decreased slightly by 1.1 percent year-on-year to around 19.7 million in June 2026. For the first half of the year, overall traffic across the Group increased by 1.0 percent to 77.7 million passengers.
