EXG transports heavy steel structures for MTHL project

Jan 21, 2022

The team from Express Global Logistics (EXG), member to the Worldwide Project Consortium (WWPC) in India, along with their partner, successfully transported the first of 30 OSD (Orthotropic Steel Decks) weighing an incredible 1362 ton. The transportation was done for one of the largest infrastructure projects in India, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link Project (MTHL). The cargo was moved at the Heavy Civil Infrastructure IC site, Sewri, Mumbai.

The OSD measured 118 x 14.87 x 7.5 meter. The cargo was transported on 12 axle line x 4 (48 axles) and a 12 axle line x 2 ( 24 axles) totaling 72 self propelled modular transporter (SPMT) axle lines with 4 Power Pack Units (PPU).

The first of the 30 pieces of cargo was moved from the manufacturing units assembly line to Kerosene Jetty and the load transfer at the jetty was done from SPMT to skid chair car.

Some salient features of the operation were:

  • Being involved at the nascent stage of the project by supplying the SPMT stool structure design to the client.
  • Aligning the locking plate of the OSD on tilting hinges twice with a bare minimum tolerance of 10mm, first on the axle during transport and second during the load    transfer to the skid chair car.
  • Handling the special machinery with precision considering size and weight of the cargo.
  • To match the project planning implementation in 2 days.
  • The team coordinated the transportation by factoring in high tide that happens only twice a month at this jetty for smooth roll on and roll off movement.

A spokesperson for the company states: “The team's thorough planning to organise and prepare at the site before the movement of the cargo took place, allowed for a smooth execution of the project. The team ensured the highest safety standards. EXG was committed to speed up the transport and is proud to be associated with the prestigious MTHL project.”
