Ethanol fuel proves to be a solution for lower GHG emissions

Feb 19, 2024

ProTrans International announced the completion of the first of multiple pilot programs developed for a Tier 1 supplier, known in part for its emission control technology. Dedicated to improving sustainability in the supply chain and working toward a net-zero target, the Tier 1 supplier and ProTrans agreed to explore alternative fuel options to help lower the organization’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and reduce their carbon footprint. ProTrans evaluated various providers and selected ClearFlame Engine Technologies for the first pilot.

“Through a collaborative effort, we researched multiple companies offering alternative fuel solutions. We settled on ClearFlame Engine Technologies because of the ease of implementation and the viable options they offer for both short-haul and long-haul trucking at a price point that is comparable to current diesel options,” said Shane Dye, General Manager of ProTrans’ asset-based division, Millennial Transport Services.

ClearFlame’s mission is to deliver cost savings to customers while helping fleets meet their sustainability goals, without compromising performance or uptime. The company has developed a technology that repowers heavy-duty internal combustion diesel engines to break free from diesel and run on decarbonized, renewable, liquid fuels. ProTrans coordinated with ClearFlame to integrate a 6-cylinder, 15L ClearFlame-enabled engine into a Class 8 tractor for use with their trailers on a specific set of linehauls.

“ClearFlame is thrilled to have ProTrans as a customer for our engine technology. ProTrans has shown tremendous leadership in educating customers on their vision for immediate and cost-effective carbon reductions, and we’re honored to partner with ProTrans to bring that vision to reality,” said BJ Johnson, CEO and Co-Founder of ClearFlame Engine Technologies.

The ClearFlame tractors run on E98 fuel with monitored operating systems for preventative action, including a collision mitigation system. The pilot program was implemented over an 875+ mile round trip

route with daily linehauls and encompassed nearly 4,300 miles in a 9-day period. Data was collected to determine the effects of using the ClearFlame tractors and potential savings over traditional diesel tractors.

Not only do alternative fuel options reduce our consumption of fossil fuels, but the results showed a 42% reduction in GHG emissions by using the ClearFlame E98 tractors and 3 tons of carbon avoided. In turn, there was significant savings in fuel costs realized.
