Brand new Kuenz Intermodal Freerider for CCT in Moerdijk, Netherlands

Sep 23, 2025

Austrian crane manufacturer Kuenz is going strong in the Dutch market reinforcing its partnership with long-term customer Combined Cargo Terminals (CCT).

CCT is already operating a Kuenz RMG crane for barge handling at its Alpherium terminal in Alphen a.d. Rijn. The terminal has developed into one of the largest of its kind in the Netherlands. Containers are shipped via Alphen aan den Rijn to and from the deepsea terminals in Rotterdam, Antwerp and Moerdijk its services, CCT covers the whole of Europe and beyond by inland shipping vessel, ocean-going ship or rail.

CCT operates a shortsea terminal in Moerdijk too, a strategic location between Rotterdam and Antwerp. Intermodal activities of CCT in Moerdijk are picking up very fast with not less than 12 trains per week and growth to be expected in the years to come.

On a 700 m craneway, Kuenz will deliver a brand new Freerider (RTG) for a manual intermodal operation featuring an aerodynamic single girder coupled with a A-shape gantry structure design for best wind resistance and utmost stiffness, the patented Evo-hoisting system for increased reliability and container handling accuracy.

These features especially allow Kuenz Freerider to travel with full load at full speed, a unique feature on the RTG market.

As further unique highlight, trucks will be handled under a cantilever with 4 m useful outreach, a tailor-made solution that provides highest operation safety avoiding collision between trucks and crane (no crossing). Three trains and 2 container rows will be handled between the crane’s posts.

The crane is due to be delivered Q4 2026.

Statement Walter Schönecker Künz: ‘We look back on a long and trusting partnership with our customer and are proud to have concluded the first contract for a cantilever RTG in the intermodal sector. This investment will further increase safety in handling operations and at the same time lay the foundation for automating the crane in the future.’

CCT CEO Luc Smits searched through the market for best option to combinate efficiency , safety and special design for the Moerdijk operations, Kuenz with the Cantilver was the unique missing link in safety and efficiency.
