2025 logistics digital tech trends

The digitalization of the supply chain is well underway, closing technological gaps in and speeding up processes that provide the links in the supply chain.

In 2025, the logistics industry is increasingly focused on closing the gaps that exist across the supply chain, and technology plays a pivotal role in achieving this, says Rene Alvarenga, VP, Product Management at Kaleris.

“As of the beginning of 2025, the transportation industry is on a path of a transformative shift driven by technological innovation,” adds Andre Luecht, Global Strategy Lead for Transport and Logistics, Zebra Technologies.

Driving this technological trajectory in the supply chain, the vendors on AJOT’s 2025 Top Fifty Logistics Tech Providers list are leading a variety of digital tech trends this year, including:

Integrated Logistics Solutions

One of the top logistics tech trends today is the shift from standalone software to integrated, data-driven solutions, according to Thomas Rucker, President of Tideworks Technology. This unlocks the full potential of AI, automation, and other emerging technologies. Marine and rail terminals need a strong, modern foundation to support these tools, and that begins with a TOS that offers real-time operational data and enables API-driven extensibility to connect with systems across the terminal ecosystem.

“Unified platforms that connect terminal operating systems (TOS), transportation management systems (TMS), and yard management systems (YMS) are becoming essential for seamless data exchange and execution across supply chain nodes,” explains Alvarenga from Kaleris. “This integration ensures stakeholders have access to reliable, actionable insights that drive efficiency and collaboration.”

“Instead of overbuilding with separate tools like TMS, YMS, and dock scheduling, high-growth shippers are choosing integrated platforms that go live in weeks and start delivering ROI fast,” observes Felipe Capella, CEO and Co-Founder, Loadsmart.

In addition, logistics networks are investing in robust API integrations, standardized data formats, and platform interoperability, enabling real-time insights to flow directly into TMS and planning systems, adds Rachelle Yeingst, Senior Director, Product Management at e2open.

Digital Documentation

Digital documentation is already becoming increasingly essential to transform international trade by simplifying and streamlining communication between shippers, carriers, and consignees, according to John Pritchard, Head of Product and Development at WiseTech Global.

Real-Time Visibility

Real-time visibility is critical in today’s fast-moving supply chains, advises Brian Thompson, Chief Commercial Officer, SMC³. This is especially true during periods of economic volatility, where disruptions can ripple quickly through the supply chain.

Geofencing

“Visibility isn’t just about tracking a load from A to B. It’s about having total awareness across Truckload, LTL, Final Mile, Parcel, air and ocean,” explains Brian Smith, CEO of Banyan Technology. “Geofencing brings a new level of precision to freight visibility. By creating virtual boundaries around key locations, teams can get instant alerts when shipments arrive, depart or deviate from their expected path. This proactive tracking not only improves ETA accuracy but also strengthens accountability with carriers and partners and prevents fraud and theft.”

Unified Fleet Management

“Manufacturers, retailers, distributors and logistics service providers of all sizes operating private or dedicated fleets want comprehensive solutions proven to enhance fleet and driver productivity, foster safety and elevate the end customer experience,” says James Wee, GM, Fleet Management at Descartes. A unified platform should integrate numerous systems, leverage AI for improved safety compliance and higher quality route execution and expand route optimization capabilities and deployment options.

Carbon Emissions Calculators

While recent shifts in federal policy under the current U.S. administration have eased some regulatory pressures, Thompson from SMC³ says sustainability remains a concern for the logistics industry. “Having the right technology to efficiently measure and manage carbon impact has become an important strategic differentiator.”

Customs Compliance Solutions

“Customs brokers and importers are under more pressure than ever as regulatory changes continue to hit fast and often with minimal warning,” observes Gary Nemmers, CEO of Magaya. “In this environment, technology can make all the difference between falling behind and staying ahead.”

The rapid growth in cross-border freight has been accompanied by uncertainty and new complexities in customs management, Jose Guerrero, Director of U.S. Customs Operations at Uber Freight, agrees. “Shippers need real-time data and solutions to keep their operations nimble. Specialized logistics AI tools that can swiftly conduct cross-network analysis will be critical, allowing shippers to assess and surface opportunities across lanes, customers, carriers, and origins so they can make informed decisions faster and with confidence.”

Global Trade Intelligence

Global businesses need advanced intelligence to effectively manage their global trade activities: access to the right market, regulatory (e.g., tariffs and duties) and risk management content (e.g., sanctions and export controls), as well as the ability to effectively navigate and leverage that content to make the best decisions for their business, says Anne Van de Heetkamp, VP of Product Management, Global Trade Intelligence at Descartes.

Predictive Analytics

Shippers are increasingly leveraging predictive and prescriptive analytics not just as supply chain planning tools, but as enablers of smarter procurement strategies and agile transportation execution, says Yeingst from e2open. This is especially important for those managing complex, time-sensitive transportation operations.

Rishi Parti, CEO of Info-X cites Freight Rate Optimization as a use case. Analyzing historical data and market trends for forecasting helps freight forwarders and NVOCCs optimize rates and make data-driven pricing decisions.

AI Automation

“In 2025, AI is set to redefine logistics by enabling unprecedented levels of efficiency and precision,” Jonah McIntire, Chief Platform Officer at Trimble, anticipates. “This translates to streamlined operations, lower costs, enhanced visibility and more business opportunities.”

Smith from Banyan Technology elaborates, “AI is transforming logistics by automating core functions like rating, routing and pricing. It enables teams to make faster decisions and reduces the guesswork around freight spend. When predictive models are built into operations, businesses can respond more intelligently to market shifts.”

AI-Powered Demand Forecasting

“AI-powered demand forecasting and replenishment solutions are transforming supply chain management in 2025,” asserts Lee Kimball, SVP and GM at TrueCommerce. “The real game-changer is artificial intelligence’s ability to process massive datasets in real time, identifying patterns traditional manual analysis would miss. This capability is especially valuable in today’s market where consumer behavior changes rapidly, and manual efforts can’t keep up. By implementing AI-powered tools, companies can maintain optimal stock levels, prevent lost sales, reduce operational costs, and make agile, data-driven decisions — ultimately ushering in a new era of supply chain efficiency.”

Advanced GenAI

The use of generative AI (GenAI) in logistics has advanced far beyond applying large language models to synthesize information and generate text, explains Mark Albrecht, VP for Artificial Intelligence at C.H. Robinson, noting that GenAI agents can provide price quotes, process orders, acquire trucking capacity, set appointments for pickup and delivery, and check on loads in transit.
