AASHTO applauds Senate EPW leaders’ bipartisan reauthorization legislation

May 24, 2021

The following is a formal statement of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials regarding the proposed bipartisan Surface Transportation Reauthorization Act of 2021.

“AASHTO applauds Senate Environment and Public Works Chairman Tom Carper (D-DE), Ranking Member Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) and EPW Subcommittee on Transportation and Infrastructure Chairman Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Subcommittee Ranking Member Kevin Cramer (R-ND) for leading this important bipartisan step toward a surface transportation reauthorization,” said Jim Tymon, AASHTO executive director. “The proposed Surface Transportation Reauthorization Act of 2021 provides much-needed program stability through its five-year funding platform at 22 percent above current levels. The bill also provides 90 percent of total highway funding from the Highway Trust Fund by formula to states, continuing to utilize the proven foundation of the Federal-aid Highway Program. It also directly addresses resiliency, carbon reduction, and safety for all roadway users, while supporting urban and rural communities, improving project delivery, and providing flexibility necessary for states to maintain and improve their roads and bridges.”
