AAPA welcomes Branch and Varela to Board of Directors

Nov 25, 2025

The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) announced that Beth Ann Branch, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA), officially joined its Board of Directors in October 2025. Branch’s appointment was introduced to members during AAPA’s 114th Annual Convention & Expo in Québec City, Canada.

“I am honored to join the AAPA Board of Directors at such a crucial time for ports and global trade,” said Branch. “I look forward to working with my colleagues to strengthen supply chains, advance infrastructure investment, and drive economic growth for our communities and nation.”

With more than 20 years of experience in the transportation and logistics industry, Branch has led major initiatives across ports and global shipping. As President & CEO of Port NOLA and CEO of the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad, she is advancing the Louisiana International Terminal, the first greenfield container terminal in the U.S. in decades. Her career includes leadership roles at the Alabama Port Authority, the Port of Oakland, and nearly two decades with Maersk in the U.S. and Denmark, as well as international development work supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Earlier this year, AAPA also welcomed a new Board Member representing U.S. Great Lakes Ports: Erik Varela, Executive Director of the Illinois International Port District, succeeding Deb DeLuca, who retired earlier this year. Varela has led the Illinois International Port District since 2021, bringing more than two decades of experience spanning government service, legal affairs, and the rail industry. Prior to joining the Port, he served as Senior Director of Public Affairs for Union Pacific Railroad and previously held leadership roles within Cook County government and the Chicago Park District.

“Beth and Erik bring deep experience and proven leadership that will strengthen AAPA’s Board at a pivotal time for our industry,” said Chett Chiasson, Chair of the AAPA Board of Directors and Executive Director of the Greater Lafourche Port Commission. “Their insight and commitment to advancing port infrastructure, workforce development, and long-term competitiveness will be invaluable as we continue working together to support the economic vitality of ports across the Americas.”

Branch and Varela join the AAPA Board as the association continues advancing policies and strategies that strengthen trade, resilience, and economic opportunity across the hemisphere.
