100+ THT New Cool reefers on the road

Jun 21, 2021

VSDV has repeatedly ordered several New Cool reefers since its first New Cool trailer was delivered in 2018. With this new order, the company has over 20 New Cool refrigerated trailers in its fleet, acting as frontrunner with the company’s goals of silent, environmentally friendly refrigerated transport.

“This is a requirement for urban environments which must be met by 2025 and we are happy to have been pioneers in this three years ago. It has given us a head start in our contribution to emission-free refrigerated transport and is something our customers can benefit from as well. A win-win situation”, says Rober van Straalen, Director and Co-owner of VSDV. He continues: “THT New Cool and Van Straalen De Vries have a great partnership because we share common values and goals. It is with great pleasure that we have received the 100th trailer manufactured by THT New Cool, and our aim is to order many more in the future to further contribute to making both a positive economic and ecological change in the heavy-duty transport sector.”

Development

THT New Cool B.V., the trailer development and rental company based in the Netherlands, started in 2007 with the concept development of a fully electric refrigerated trailer to exclude the use of diesel and other environmentally harmful emissions. The product launch in 2012 was followed by a three-year period of prototype testing, resulting in a further optimised product in 2015. After a new three-year large-scale fieldtesting phase, an even further optimised product came to life in 2018. With a two-year pre-series production phase and over 50 manufactured and running vehicles, THT New Cool B.V. began large-scale series production in 2020.

Several satisfied customers are already experiencing the benefits of driving with this fully-electric reefer concept, such as Hessing, VSDV, Coenen Boxmeer, Cornelissen Group, A. Kanters and PNO.

Furthermore, companies such as Krummen Kerzers and Nagel Group are currently testing several THT New Cool reefers, with the aim of potentially including the reefers in their future operations on a large scale.

The concept

A THT New Cool reefer can be manufactured by all trailer manufacturers including Krone Trailer and Chereau, and the concept includes partners such as Carrier Transicold’s Vector eCool and VALX bv’s E2! HD Energy axle. The new Vector eCool refrigeration system includes an engineless refrigeration unit powered by a battery pack combined with a VALX axle generator. The fully electric technology, with a new cuttingedge energy recovery and storage system, converts kinetic energy generated by the trailer into electricity, which is then stored in a battery pack to power the refrigeration unit. This loop creates a fully autonomous system which does not produce any direct carbon dioxide (CO2) or particulate emissions.

THT New Cool’s fully electric refrigerated trailers for sale or rent are silent PIEK-compliant, which means that operating noise is below 60 dB. Even with the system’s axle generator and battery pack fitted, it is still significantly lighter than a standard diesel unit with a full tank of fuel. It doesn’t emit any CO2 or other pollutants and is offered at the same total cost level as a conventional diesel reefer.
