ZF enables continuous software update compliance for the era of software defined trailers

Apr 22, 2026

With July 7, 2026, UNECE R156 deadline fast approaching, trailer OEMs are increasingly turning to ZF — the first ISO 24089 certified Tier-1 supplier to the trailer industry — and its modular SUMS Service Suite to establish tools and processes for safe, secure, and audit-ready software updates to achieve sustainable, compliance at an accelerated pace.

As commercial vehicles transition into the era of software defined architectures, trailer manufacturers face a fundamental regulatory shift. From July 2026, UNECE R156 requires trailer OEMs to assume full accountability for software update governance by implementing a Software Update Management System (SUMS). With its SUMS Service Suite, ZF positions itself as a trusted partner, enabling continuous compliance, operational control, and long term business continuity.

From one time approval to continuous compliance

Until today, trailers have been software enabled vehicles where suppliers retained control over software development, updates, and parameter changes throughout the vehicle lifecycle. With UNECE R156, accountability shifts from the supplier to the trailer manufacturer. While suppliers continue to develop software packages, OEMs become responsible for approving, releasing, documenting, and evidencing every software update.

“Approval gets vehicles on the road, but continuous compliance keeps them there, says Dr. Peter Bruns, Trailer Launch Application Engineer and SUMS Expert at ZF’s Commercial Vehicle Solutions division. “UNECE R156 fundamentally changes how software updates are managed. The ZF SUMS Service Suite turns software update governance into a controlled, auditable, and repeatable operational process — enabling OEMs to maintain compliance across the entire vehicle lifecycle.”

UNECE R156 is not requesting another safety technology. Instead, it fundamentally changes how software updates are managed across a vehicle’s lifecycle., Furthermore approvals move from a one time event to an ongoing obligation requiring regular checks, certification renewals, and auditable evidence of compliance.

Solving the Unique Trailer Challenge with Centralized Governance

Trailer manufacturers face a particularly complex challenge:
their vehicles integrate software from multiple suppliers, are maintained across decentralized and often independent workshops, and undergo frequent parameter changes — such as brake pressures, lift axle logic, or reference tire pressures — all of which legally qualify as software updates under UNECE R156.

ZF addresses this challenge with an end to end solution that bridges OEMs, suppliers, and workshops:

  • ZF’s SCALAR Software Manager enables centralized software update governance across all vehicle configurations
  • ZF [pro]Diagnostics ensures standardized, secure, and documented software update execution in the field
  • Automated workflows and documentation, as well as a single source of truth keep OEMs permanently audit ready

Establishing ZF Leadership in Software Defined Trailer Technologies

With decades of leadership in braking systems and further trailer technologies, ZF is the first Tier 1 supplier to the trailer industry with ISO 24089 certification, validating its excellence in compliant, secure, and reliable software update engineering.

“With the SUMS Service Suite, we are not adding another compliance product — we are providing the operational engine for software defined trailers,” says Christian Hainzl, Vice President Key Account Management and Head of Sales Trailer EMEA at ZF. “ZF enables OEMs to maintain full control, to protect type approval, and to allow safe and secure parameter changes in the field.”

The SUMS Service Suite uniquely combines:

      • SUMS ready ZF trailer products
      • Modular software tools supporting tailored certification journeys
      • Comprehensive handbook, templates, and checklists
      • Training and consulting services for OEMs, suppliers, and workshops
      • An ISO 24089 aligned, R156 ready approach proven with certified customers
