Understanding the shipping schedule that suits you best

Mar 13, 2023

If you’re an owner-operator, or just someone looking for your own freelance shipping work, a question of schedule lingers in the air. In many senses, you might feel compelled to do as much work as possible to make more money. That makes sense, but it’s important to be aware of the toll that it could take on your personal life.

Striking for an ideal work/life balance is something that many people strive for – and while it might not necessarily be as important to you as it is to others, you’ll still likely have your own preferences you’d like to adhere to. Fortunately, this is a line of work that you can customize to your liking.

Owner-Operator

The ambition to carve out your own life through a business that you create yourself is an ambition to many, and it’s something that you could achieve here by becoming an owner-operator. While that business might take some time to form fully, having your own control and being immersed in the daily operations yourself can help guide which direction you take. Part of the problem that you might find when starting up is the lack of work that’s available, something that could prevent you from feeling as though you’re making progress. To remedy this, getting a good idea of where you can find load work can give you the momentum that you need.

Occasional Freelance

Perhaps it isn’t something that you want to throw yourself into so completely, however. It might be that you already have another form of income, which you want access to occasionally to provide you with money when you need it. Alternatively, you might just prefer to have less work if you know that you can live with a reduced income. Whatever the case might be, job boards exist that allow you to accomplish this end in a manner that might be more hands-off than the previous suggestion.

That being said, if this is a new idea to you, it might be worth looking into the kinds of lifestyle changes, both positive and negative, that freelance work can bring before you jump into it. Freelance work is not for everyone, so the decision to work this way should not be taken lightly.

Regular Employment

It might be that you’d like to go to the other end of the spectrum and have this control taken out of your hands to a certain extent. That’s not to say that you’d get no free time, just that a schedule would remove the control you have over when you have free time. Regular employment of this kind can have many benefits, such as a set salary and benefits that you can enjoy without having to worry about how the changing tides of work could change that.

However, the lack of freedom that comes with this compared to other options might not be as much to your liking – though it could be an option that helps you to get the experience you need to one day start your own operation.
