The critical role of U.S. transportation infrastructure enterprise (TIE) providers in moving people and goods makes them targets for cyberattacks, which means that cyber security must be a crucial part of their operations, S&P Global Ratings said today in "Cyber Risk In A New Era: U.S. Transportation Infrastructure Providers Remain Vigilant On The Road To Cyber Preparedness."
"We expect TIE entities will be targeted more frequently for cyberattacks given their role as providers of critical infrastructure," said S&P Global Ratings credit analyst Scott Shad. "However, we view the overall risks as moderate, although there are still lower-probability, high-impact risks within the sector," Mr. Shad added.
To date, cyberattacks affecting transportation providers have been short in duration with minimal lasting effects on operations and key financial metrics. Consequently, we have not seen any longer-term effect on entity creditworthiness yet.
