The Swedish Club announces expansion into the Americas with new office in New York

Dec 02, 2025

The Swedish Club is pleased to announce the opening of its first office in the United States, to be located in New York City. This is a major strategic step in broadening the Club’s international reach and supporting members across the Americas. The expansion marks a natural next phase in the Club’s long-term global growth strategy and establishes a solid platform for delivering closer, more responsive service in one of the world’s most dynamic maritime regions.

To lead this important new chapter, the Club has appointed Ian Duthie as Regional Executive Director, Americas, a move that brings world-class leadership and deep regional expertise to the launch of its New York operations.

An accomplished leader in the marine insurance and shipping sectors

Ian Duthie joins The Swedish Club from Britannia P&I Club, where he has served as Commercial Director Americas, overseeing commercial activities across North and South America. Ian brings more than 30 years of global experience in marine insurance and commercial vessel operations in business development roles where he has been a key contributor to driving growth and strengthening presence across key markets.

His career includes senior executive positions within the international marine insurance sector and leadership roles across major U.S. shipping organizations. In his previous regional leadership roles, he delivered strong portfolio growth and established new strategic partnerships with leading shipowners and operators.

Ian holds an MSc in Economics from The London School of Economics and a BA in Economics from The Virginia Military Institute. A former U.S. Navy Surface Warfare Officer and U.S. Coast Guard Reserve Officer, he serves on the Board of Directors of the National Cargo Bureau (NCB) and is a member of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

A pivotal appointment for The Swedish Club’s global growth

As Regional Executive Director, Americas, Ian Duthie will lead the development of The Swedish Club’s new New York office and oversee the Club’s expansion in the region. He will be responsible for building local partnerships, driving member engagement and shaping the Club’s long-term market strategy in the Americas.

Thomas Nordberg, Managing Director of The Swedish Club, commented: “The opening of our New York office represents a major milestone for The Swedish Club as we grow our presence in the Americas. The appointment of Ian Duthie provides the strong leadership and deep market insight needed to ensure our success in this key region. We are confident that Ian’s experience and broad market relationships will be instrumental in building a credible and lasting platform for our members in the Western Hemisphere.”
