Stillstrom joins the Maritime Battery Forum to advance offshore power and charging solutions

The Maritime Battery Forum welcomes Stillstrom, an innovative company owned by the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group, dedicated to delivering offshore power and charging solutions, as its newest member.

Stillstrom is dedicated to transforming offshore power supply by enabling vessels to connect to clean electricity while stationary at sea or in port. The company’s mission is to eliminate offshore vessel emissions and support the maritime industry’s decarbonization through cutting-edge offshore charging technology.

By providing offshore charging solutions for hybrid and electric Service Operation Vessels (SOVs), Stillstrom plays a critical role in enabling emissions-free operation at sea. The company’s innovative infrastructure also establishes Zero Emission Anchorage Zones—transformative spaces where vessels traditionally reliant on fossil fuels can now switch to clean electrical power, drastically reducing emissions such as CO₂, NOₓ, and SOₓ.

Driving Maritime Decarbonization Since 2019

Stillstrom began its journey in 2019 as a business innovation initiative within Maersk Supply Service. Its mission was clear: to tackle offshore emissions through electrification. Early support from the Danish Maritime Fund and a pivotal grant from the Danish Energy Agency’s EUDP programme helped fuel the development of Stillstrom’s core technologies. By 2020, the company had introduced its first offshore charging concepts, and in 2021, a groundbreaking collaboration with offshore wind giant Ørsted propelled Stillstrom into the spotlight as a key player in offshore clean power infrastructure.

Today, Stillstrom operates as an independent company under the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group, with a dedicated focus on scaling and deploying offshore charging systems that align with the broader global push toward green energy.

Active Projects and Innovations in Battery Integration

Highlights of Stillstrom’s recent and ongoing initiatives include:

• ScottishPower Renewables Collaboration: Under the Operation Zero initiative, Stillstrom co-authored a white paper examining the feasibility and operational integration of offshore charging. The study aims to boost confidence in battery-supported offshore wind farm operations.
• Feasibility Studies for Zero Emission Anchorage Zones: Stillstrom is actively assessing the use of offshore charging to supply hotel loads and recharge vessel batteries outside ports such as Port of Aberdeen, Port of Skagen – Denmark’s 10^th largest point of emissions and has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Panama Canal Authority to explore clean charging solutions in one of the world’s most strategic maritime corridors.
• Harbor Trials and Dynamic Positioning (DP) Tests: In 2024, the company conducted harbor trials to test the connection process between a vessel and a quay-side cable reel. The focus was exclusively on verifying that connection and disconnection cycles were safe, efficient, and repeatable in real-world conditions. These trials confirmed that the operation - based on established industry practices - was intuitive, with vessel crews quickly gaining confidence in the system.
• Virtual Reality (VR) Training: In 2025, Stillstrom launched a VR training module to help vessel crews learn safe and efficient offshore charging procedures, laying the groundwork for broader adoption and operational excellence.
• Industry Collaboration on eSOV Integration: Stillstrom is in close dialogue with major global wind farm developers and Service Operation Vessel (SOV) owners to explore the integration of offshore charging systems with hybrid and fully electric SOVs (eSOVs). These discussions focus on optimizing battery technology deployment within offshore wind farms to support decarbonized O&M operations.

These initiatives reflect Stillstrom’s leadership not only in technology deployment but also in building the operational know-how required to implement maritime battery systems at scale.
