S&P Global: AI’s adoption will accelerate and direct change in labor markets, energy, and society
Dec 13, 2024AI will accelerate change that will be directed by those entities that effectively harness the technology to transform business, the economy, and society, S&P Global said in the latest edition of its "Look Forward Journal."
"Look Forward: Artificial Intelligence," is the eighth volume in our series, which looks beyond near-term events to explore the trends that will shape the future. The latest research focuses on the opportunities and risks stemming from AI's capabilities and applications in labor markets, the energy sector, and society.
"AI is undeniably accelerating progress and driving transformative change," said Swamy Kocherlakota, EVP and Chief Digital Solutions Officer at S&P Global. "S&P Global's expertise and rich data sets offer insights into AI that will enable companies, governments, and other institutions to strategically navigate the coming transition, and effectively shape and power the future of global markets."
Key highlights of the research include:
| • | AI and labor: Change is inevitable, but human capabilities remain essential. AI will give rise to improved efficiency and productivity, new roles, transformative human-AI collaboration, autonomous systems, and labor redistribution and reskilling. Integration with labor will occur in distinct phases, each presenting unique challenges, ethical considerations, and benefits. |
| • | AI an energy: The big picture. Rapid expansion of datacenter capacity could strain U.S. power sector infrastructure. Yet datacenters' underpinning of the digital economy will also reshape electricity consumption, contributing to efficiencies that, with the adoption of clean energy, could offset the effects of incremental demand. |
• | AI and Society: Implications for global equality and quality of life. AI's transformation of societies will be uneven across regions, communities, and social classes. Hopes of a net positive influence depends on policymakers, private corporations, nongovernmental institutions, and societal norms steering AI's responsible, secure, and equitable development and deployment. |
