SMT continues to lead the way in training on the fuel transition in maritime

Jul 09, 2025

Stream Marine Technical (SMT) has underlined its commitment to furthering the safe use of ammonia as a marine fuel by taking part in a series of cutting-edge HAZID/HAZOP Workshops to test how ammonia bunkering could be carried out safely in port.

The two simulation Hazard Identification and Hazard and Operability Study workshops, one in Singapore and the other in Western Australia, were designed to ensure that ammonia bunkering could be carried out safely with the appropriate Emergency Response Procedures in place.

Working alongside two partners, BlueTack and OSRL, SMT contributed to the HAZOP and Scenario Selection Workshop for the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonization (GCMD).

SMT will use lessons learned from these workshops to develop in-house ammonia awareness courses related to simulated Ammonia Bunkering Operation by Ship-to-Ship transfer.

SMT were instrumental in developing the ERP, which was eventually adopted for use in the recently successful ammonia transfer trial in Pilbara.

Praising the work of his team, Martin White, CEO of the Stream Marine Group, said the simulated ammonia bunkering operations in Western Australia were completed successfully and without incident.

“We currently have a range of awareness training to meet industry demand,” he said. “We are already covering the fundamentals in our approved IGF training and hope that SMT Technical will play a significant role in developing ammonia procedures and training courses in the future,” he added.
