The ship carrying the largest container cranes ever for Oakland is anchored out in the SF Bay. Weather permitting, the ship will pick up anchor, sail into the harbor, and dock at the Port of Oakland today.
We do not want the timing of the ship’s move revealed to the public prior to the action, in order to minimize the potential of crowds gathering along the shore during this pandemic.
The timing for moving the vessel is stated in this advisory strictly for media’s benefit in order to schedule photography.
Tentative schedule – Ship pulls up anchor at about 11 a.m., sails into the harbor, and arrives at the berth around Noon. There is no media access to film at the terminal. The ship can be filmed as it passes Middle Harbor Shoreline Park (at the end of 7th St. in the Port area) heading into the harbor entrance. This would be the best land-side photo op.
The vessel (ZHEN HUA 35) will come to berth 58 at Oakland International Container Terminal (OICT), the largest marine terminal at the Port. OICT is operated by Stevedoring Services of America. The company invested in the three, new container cranes at Oakland valued at roughly $30 million.
The new cranes are the biggest for Oakland and the largest on the U.S. West Coast. They are taller and have longer booms compared to the older cranes being replaced. The booms can reach across a ship 24 containers wide. The cranes are high enough to work a vessel with containers stacked 14 high.
