Ship It Zero applauds new ZEMBA tender, shows progress about e-fuels future

Dec 18, 2025

The Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA), an alliance of freight buyers that includes major retailers — like members Amazon, IKEA and Nike — announced that global container shipping company Hapag-Lloyd and North Sea Container Line have won ZEMBA’s second tender, enabling ZEMBA’s members to abate ocean transport emissions by deploying two hydrogen-derived e-fuels.

• Hapag-Lloyd will deploy e-methanol on large methanol dual-fuel containerships, on a trans-oceanic lane.

• NCL will deploy the world’s first e-ammonia-powered containership, serving a northern European trade lane.

Member companies, including cofounders Amazon, Patagonia and Tchibo, and members including Beiersdorf, Brooks Running, Green Worldwide Shipping, IKEA, Nike, Poly Medicure Ltd., and Sport-Thieme will be able to deploy e-fuels if interested in the deal.

Statement from Teresa Bui, Senior Director of the Climate Campaign, Pacific Environment:

“Congratulations to ZEMBA on their second successful tender to support retailers to move their cargo on zero-emission ships. The shipping industry is one of the dirtiest polluters on the planet and this announcement signals to the market that the demand for zero-emissions shipping is here. Ship It Zero applauds the deployment of e-fuels and cautions that ammonia must be safely used with proper protocols and technologies in place — this is a critical step in building trust and momentum for clean shipping solutions.”
