Secretary Raimondo statement on announcement of Trans-Atlantic Data Privacy Framework

Mar 25, 2022

Secretary Gina M. Raimondo has issued the following statement regarding the announcement today by President Biden and European Union President Von der Leyen on the Trans-Atlantic Data Privacy Framework between both governments:

“Today’s Trans-Atlantic Data Privacy Framework announcement between the United States and the European Union reflects our shared recognition of the importance of trusted data flows, which are critical to our continued economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as our common commitment to the rule of law and data protection. By ensuring a durable and reliable legal basis for trans-Atlantic data flows, we have paved the way for a more inclusive digital economy that will benefit American consumers and small businesses alike. The framework lays the foundation for further economic cooperation and will allow American businesses to more effectively compete globally, while also ensuring that unprecedented commitments to strengthen privacy protections do not come at the cost of our national security interests at home and abroad. This framework is the result of historic cooperation between our governments and builds upon constructive and successful negotiations for the mutual benefit of our businesses, workers, and consumers.”
