one hour ago

SAAM Towage took delivery of two new tugboats built by SANMAR Shipyards in Turkey after they successfully completed their sea trials. The units, named SAAM Carancho and SAAM Kanan, will be used in operations in Chile and Mexico, respectively.

“These new units reflect our ongoing efforts to modernize our fleet and offer solutions tailored to the needs of our customers and their operations. These advances are part of our growth strategy, which we have set as a strategic objective,” said Pablo Cáceres, manager of Innovation and New Construction at SAAM Towage.

With these additions, the company now has 15 SANMAR-built tugboats in its fleet, strengthening a partnership that began in 2018 and is based on shared standards of safety, efficiency and sustainability.

Technical Specs

SAAM Carancho is an ESCORT Biğaçay-class tugboat based on the RAstar 2900SX design. It has 80 metric tons of bollard pull, a speed of 12 knots, 2,350-kW CAT engines, a constant-tension maneuvering winch and “Fire-Fighting 1” firefighting capability. The unit will operate in Chile, supporting services that require a high level of responsiveness in different sea conditions and the ability to maneuver in confined spaces.

The SAAM Kanan, of the Boğaçay class, is based on Robert Allan’s RAmparts 2400SX-MKII design. It features 80 metric tons of fixed-point bollard pull and excellent maneuverability in confined spaces. The vessel is also equipped with 2,350-kW CAT engines and a “Fire-Fighting 1” class rating, making it particularly well-suited for high-traffic ports. It will be integrated into the company's operations in Mexico to provide efficient and safe assistance in such port environments.
