Readout of Ambassador Tai’s meeting with France Minister-Delegate for Foreign Trade Franck Riester

Feb 21, 2022

United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai today held a productive conversation with France Minister-Delegate for Foreign Trade and Economic Attractiveness Franck Riester. Ambassador Tai began the meeting by affirming the importance and strength of U.S.- French cooperation on a wide range of important issues, including working together to promote trade policies that ensure American and French workers face fair competition in the global economy.

They discussed the domestic tools on both sides of the Atlantic to address the challenges from non-market economies, the large civil aircraft framework and the global arrangement on steel and aluminum trade. Ambassador Tai also highlighted the importance of eliminating forced labor from global supply chains.

Ambassador Tai and Minister-Delegate Riester discussed the important work of the U.S.-EU Trade and Technology Council, the need for reform of the World Trade Organization (WTO), including its dispute settlement system, and reaching a meaningful conclusion of the fisheries subsidies negotiations. They agreed to stay in regular communication in the months to come, continuing the series of engagements they have had since last fall.
