Q-Free marks 50-million transponders delivered as it launches next-generation OBU1010

Apr 28, 2026

Q-Free, a global leader in tolling and intelligent transportation systems, today announced a major milestone: the delivery of its 50 millionth transponder unit. The achievement underscores the company’s long-standing commitment to innovation and its role in enabling seamless, efficient mobility worldwide.

Reaching this milestone in April 2026, Q-Free continues to build on more than four decades of pioneering work in tolling technology. Since its founding in 1984, the company has consistently led the industry forward, including the delivery of the world’s first free-flow tolling station in 1990. Today, its transponders are a critical component of modern tolling infrastructure, supporting stop-free travel and reducing congestion on roads across the globe. “This is a milestone worth celebrating,” said Fredrik Nordh, EVP Tolling at Q-Free. “For more than 40 years, Q-Free has driven innovation in smarter, greener traffic solutions. With 50 million OBUs produced and delivered globally, we are helping reduce time spent in traffic while supporting more efficient and sustainable mobility.”

The milestone coincides with the launch of Q-Free’s newest transponder, the OBU1010, marking the next chapter in the company’s evolution.

Combining decades of expertise with modern engineering, the OBU1010 introduces a smaller, more sustainable, and high-performance design tailored for increasingly complex tolling environments. The new unit reflects Q-Free’s continued focus on advancing technology while meeting the evolving needs of customers and partners worldwide.

“The OBU1010 represents the next step in how we support our partners and customers worldwide,” Nordh added. “It’s not just an evolution of our technology—it reflects where tolling is headed.”

Paal Almlie, VP Supply Chain Manager, emphasized the collaborative effort behind the achievement and the broader significance of the milestone. “This milestone reflects the strength of our entire ecosystem—from customers trusting in us and adopting our next-generation OBUs, to suppliers who have helped scale production, to our employees who have consistently engineered best-in-class products,” said Almlie.

As one of the world’s leading providers of tolling technology, Q-Free continues to build on its proven track record of delivering high-performance OBUs at scale. With 50 million units now deployed and the introduction of the OBU1010, the company remains firmly positioned at the forefront of shaping the future of free-flow traffic and sustainable transportation systems.
