Fall festival honors Oakland’s multicultural past and present with free Sunday event
Halloween will collide with Día de los Muertos as fall festivities come to Jack London Square, this Sunday, October 27. The Halloween Día de los Muertos Family Fun Fest is a free event. It will feature activities for all ages, chalk artists, and live entertainment by Mexican Folklóricodancers and a Mariachi band. For young ones, there will be a costume contest and craft activities.
“As fall gets into full swing, we want to offer the community opportunities to celebrate the season, while highlighting all that Jack London Square has to offer,” said Chief Real Estate Officer Jonathan Veach. “The event honors Oakland’s diverse, multicultural community with free, family fun at Oakland’s beautiful waterfront.”
The origins of Halloween date back to ancient Celtic traditions, marking the transition between summer to winter. Día de los Muertos is rooted in Mexican tradition, honoring dearly departed family members. This festival focuses on celebrating loved ones who have passed on instead of mourning them.
