Port Canaveral receives Green Marine recertification for environmental excellence

Port Canaveral has once again earned Green Marine re-certification underscoring the Port’s commitment to environmental excellence in port operations. This was the Port’s eighth-consecutive certification by the international organization. The award was presented to the Port at the GreenTech2024 environmental conference held recently in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

“Port Canaveral has long held a high standard of environmental responsibility with our commitment to long-term sustainable goals,” stated Capt. John Murray, Port CEO. “This Green Marine re-certification underscores the quality of our environmental program and dedication of our team to best practices in planning, implementation and management of our efforts.”

Port Canaveral is among just 32 seaports in the U.S. and one of only three ports in Florida to earn the Green Marine distinction. For the Port’s initial certification in 2016, Green Marine’s detailed criteria for specific performance indicators helped Port Canaveral benchmark its environmental performance.

“Once again, for an eighth consecutive year, the Port is exceeding compliance for all applicable indicators,” stated Green Marine President and CEO, David Bolduc. “Port Canaveral is also achieving the highest level 5 for the spill prevention indicator, demonstrating environmental excellence and leadership.”

Bob Musser, Port Canaveral Senior Director, Environmental, attended the conference and accepted the certification on behalf of Port Canaveral. "For eight years, we have actively engaged in this highly valuable program, continuously raising the bar of our environmental performance. Our ultimate aim is to adopt and implement greener practices with each evaluation."

Green Marine promotes voluntary protection measures to continuously improve environmental performance. Certification is a rigorous process with the development of guiding principles beyond regulatory compliance in key areas such as aquatic invasive species, greenhouse gases and air pollutants, spill prevention, storm water and waste management, underwater noise, community impacts and environmental leadership. Criteria are used to assess performance of Green Marine participants during an annual self-evaluation and a biennial third-party verification, designed to improve the awareness of the marine industry’s activities and environmental benefits.

Green Marine is an international certification program that includes ports, terminal operators, shipyards and ship owners. Port Canaveral joined the Green Marine program in 2016.
