The Port of Philadelphia is proud to announce it has been awarded $79.7 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Clean Ports Program. This significant funding will support climate and air quality initiatives and enable the purchase of zero-emission port equipment, highlighting the port’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
The grant will enable PhilaPort to replace older, diesel-powered equipment with advanced zero-emission alternatives, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality across the port’s terminals and surrounding communities. This initiative is in line with the newly unveiled PhilaPort Strategic Plan – Destination 2040, a roadmap for the port’s development over the next 15 years, which emphasizes a strong commitment to environmental sustainability.
“We are extremely pleased to be selected by the EPA as a partner in this historic investment in port infrastructure and zero-emission port equipment,” said Jeff Theobald, Executive Director & CEO of PhilaPort. “This funding will not only help us modernize our equipment but also reinforce our dedication to creating a greener, more sustainable port. We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and contributing to the health and well-being of our community.”
The new zero-emission equipment includes electric ship-to-shore cranes, yard tractors, forklifts, and the necessary charging infrastructure to support the modern technology. Additionally, the grant provides for a new electric rail switcher to replace the existing diesel model.
EPA Clean Ports Program is a $3 billion initiative established under the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. Its primary goal is to fund zero-emission port equipment and infrastructure, as well as climate and air quality planning at U.S. ports.
